Turbo C is a fast, lightweight C compiler and integrated development environment (IDE) for MS-DOS, developed by Borland and first released in 1987. It combined a full-screen editor, project tools, and a high-speed compiler and linker in a single application, making C development practical on modest PC hardware. Widely adopted in the late 1980s for its speed, affordability, and ease of use, Turbo C supported traditional K&R C and, in later versions, broader ANSI C features. It shipped with the standard C library and the Borland Graphics Interface (BGI) for DOS graphics programming, and produced COM and EXE programs across multiple memory models. Professional bundles paired it with Turbo Assembler and Turbo Debugger. Turbo C was eventually superseded by Turbo C++ and Borland C++, but it remains notable for its influence on PC-based software development and is still encountered in educational settings and legacy DOS projects, often via emulators.
